Kihon Class
基本
Aikido Basics

The goal of this class is to introduce new Aikido students to the fundamental ideas and body movements encountered in a regular class setting.

In this class, students will learn dojo etiquette, Aikido terminology, and foundational exercises for developing mind and body coordination.  Learning how to perform "ukemi" (safely landing from various throws) is the primary focus of this weekly training session.

Kihon Class is on Monday evening from 7-8pm.  In addition to this class, new students are encouraged to attend the "all ranks" classes on our schedule.  This works out to 2-3 classes per week, which is a perfect amount of training time for any beginning Aikido student.  Find our class schedule here.

After promotion to 6th Kyu (1st orange belt), the student is invited to begin attending all other regularly scheduled classes, including the Saturday advanced training session.
However, after "graduation" from this class, many regular students continue to attend in order to strengthen their understanding of basic Aikido principles.

Our Kihon Aikido class is taught and directed by Stephen Metaxas.  Read more about Steve here.

What Our Members Are Saying

What made you choose Aikido as the martial art for your child?
I chose Aikido because it is a martial art based on self-defense. I preferred it to karate, which my child had taken for a short time, because of the emphasis on sparring, aggressive tactics and attacks. I feel it is important for children to take martial arts, to have an individual sport that they can excel at and advance in solely based on their own abilities and not based on winning or losing a game. Team sports teach many things and are important but there is a big emphasis on winning or losing a game, but with only the advancement of skills in Aikido to advance in the belts, it teaches the importance of practice and the value of competence. It is beneficial for a child to have the benefit of learning all the lessons of both team sports and martial arts, such as Aikido. -A.R.
